How to Password Protect a PDF for Free
Password protecting a PDF prevents unauthorized people from opening, printing or editing your document. This is essential for legal documents, financial records, personal files and any sensitive information you share electronically.
How to add a password to a PDF online free
- Go to QuackPDFTools Protect PDF
- Drop your PDF into the upload area
- Enter a strong open password (required to open the PDF)
- Optionally set an owner password to restrict printing and copying
- Click Protect and Download
- Test by opening the downloaded PDF — it will ask for the password
⚠️ Important: Store your password safely. QuackPDFTools does not store passwords and cannot recover them. If you forget the password, you cannot open the protected PDF.
Open password vs owner password
A PDF can have two types of passwords:
- Open password — required just to view the PDF. Without it, the document cannot be opened at all.
- Owner password — allows viewing but restricts actions like printing, copying text or editing. Used to prevent modification while allowing reading.
What encryption is used?
QuackPDFTools uses RC4 encryption — the PDF Standard Security Handler — which is compatible with Adobe Acrobat, Chrome PDF viewer, Edge, Firefox, and all major PDF readers on desktop and mobile.
How to choose a strong PDF password
- Use at least 12 characters
- Mix uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols
- Avoid dictionary words or personal information
- Use a password manager to store it safely
Is it safe to protect a PDF online?
On QuackPDFTools, yes. All encryption happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your file and password are never sent to any server. This makes it safe even for highly sensitive documents.
